The country is one of the biggest employers of foreigners in the EU, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center, with the largest number of workers in the country’s copper mining industry.
The mining sector has been hit hard by the collapse of the copper price, as the government has been forced to seek loans to pay off the debts that many foreign companies have taken on.
Some foreign companies, such as United Kingdom-based copper company Goldsmiths and American mining giant Anglo American, have also been forced out of the country.
But Cyprus has also been hit by the economic crisis in neighboring Greece, which has seen a wave of migrants fleeing the country, many of whom find themselves in desperate circumstances in the island’s crowded port city of Nicosia.
In 2015, a number of foreign companies and some local officials had faced fines for employing workers from the country illegally.
In June of this year, the island agreed to pay back more than $1.4 billion in fines and other penalties levied against its citizens and companies.
The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce, a business association that represents many of the companies in Nicosiagomor, told Business Insider that the company had only received three notices in the last five years, but “there are many more in the pipeline.”
