How to build a copper mine

A new job posting on LinkedIn for a copper mining company that is seeking to hire 300 miners in Alabama has sparked criticism from environmental groups and environmentalists.
The posting by the company, which is owned by an Alabama-based developer, states that the company has already hired 50 people to build the mine and will be adding 300 more over the next two years.
However, the job listing for the position does not specify how many workers will be required to work at the mine, and instead offers the job description that the miner will have to “help build, manage and oversee an environmentally sound, well-managed and safe copper mine in Alabama.”
The posting on the company’s website does not say what specific job would be created at the company.
The Alabama Mining Commission, the state agency that oversees mining, declined to comment.
A recent report by the National Resources Defense Council, a nonprofit advocacy group that advocates for the environment, found that about a third of the state’s 1.1 million mining jobs are unfilled.
“We have the highest unemployment rate in the nation, but it’s been a slow-moving trend,” said James R. Stegall, director of the NRDC’s energy program.
“We need to find better ways to fill those jobs, and this job posting is one way to do it.”
The job listing states that “the required experience includes at least three years of experience with an industry that includes mining and processing, copper mining and extraction, copper extraction, mining services, and copper fabrication.”
Stegall said it is unclear if the position is being created specifically for a particular type of job, but that “anywhere from 30 to 100” of the 300 applicants would likely be required for that particular job.
“There’s a big disparity between the skills and experience of those who are actually doing the work and the people that are applying,” he said.
“I think this could be a way for employers to better differentiate between the two and find the right people for the right job.”
Steball said he was concerned about the company applying to the position in the state with the state unemployment rate at 9.5 percent, a rate that is lower than the national average.
The NRDC has also been critical of the company seeking the position.
“The company’s proposal for a $15.7 million project is a giveaway to wealthy landowners and developers who will use the mine to maximize their wealth,” the group wrote in a statement.
“It’s a blatant effort to make mining a profitable industry while allowing mining companies to use taxpayer dollars to pay for their lavish lifestyles and lavish perks.”
The mining commission did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
